CLARK, NJ — Recently, sixth grade students at Carl H. Kumpf Middle School in Clark engaged in a joint language arts/social studies activity to explore the events of September 11, 2001.
Designed by language arts teachers Noelle Motyka, Meg Graff, and Melanie Mangano, and social studies teachers Tom Ricciuti and Matt Chretien, students were tasked with uncovering first-hand accounts from family members and neighbors of the events from September 11th.
Students interviewed the individuals about their experiences. Then, the students wrote newspaper articles using their interviews as primary sources. Students then engaged in a gallery walk and reflected on the importance of considering multiple perspectives when studying historical events.
“In reading and reflecting on different perspectives, students gained a better understanding of what people experienced and felt during this time,” said Ms. Motyka. “They examined the similarities and differences among the accounts and reflected on the importance of sharing stories to ensure that we never forget what happened.”
